Multicultural Achievers provides a forum for High School and Junior High students to focus on goal setting, exploring secondary and post-secondary options, college tours, and cultural enrichment. Students participate in teambuilding, leadership skill development and increasing academic achievement.
More than 70% of our Multicultural Achievers participants are newcomers to the United States (U.S.). We partner with high schools around the Greater Twin Cities Metro to offer the program after school.
At Leap High School in St. Paul, 100% of the students are immigrants that have lived in the U.S. for less than three years. All 450 students are enrolled in English Language Learner (ELL) classes. A teacher in at Shakopee High School created a video on the LEAP program. View the video
We also partner with local organizations to bring students together at our Ys. We approach youth development from a different perspective. We might offer the Accuplacer Test as an activity because it is required for non-native English speakers for admission to many local colleges. Many students join Multicultural Achievers to practice speaking English so we offer opportunities for students to talk with each other and in the large group during our meetings.
