To help aid disaster recovery, the Y works in tandem with partners like the Red Cross and others to organize activities once the crisis is over.
Once basic needs like food and shelter are met, the Y provides re-entry services through local Ys, making sure kids and family have access to counseling and activities to re-engage with their family and community.
North Minneapolis Tornado
When the tornado struck North Minneapolis, the Y responded by:
- Establishing a Task Force to plan, organize and implement the Y’s response through the Y’s Youth and Teen Enrichment Center, the Beacons program and the Y‘s Youth Intervention team.
- Mobilizing staff, volunteers, community partners and resources to support community efforts to stabilize and rebuild the Northside.
- Focusing our staff and volunteer time on providing support, safe havens, care, food and grief counseling to youth impacted by the disaster.
