Background & Results

Currently, 57 million Americans have pre-diabetes, a condition that precedes diabetes. Helping these individuals adopt and maintain healthier lifestyles and lose a small amount of weight can help prevent nearly half of new cases of type 2 diabetes.

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is:

  • An evidence-based program
  • Uses group lifestyle intervention
  • Designed to reduce the risk of diabetes in individuals with pre-diabetes or at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

This program has been proven to cut people’s chances of developing the disease by more than half.

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is based on the landmark Diabetes Prevention Program funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which showed that with lifestyle changes and modest weight reduction, a person with pre-diabetes can prevent or delay the onset of the disease by 58 percent.

RESULTS

During the first year of the program 206 participants/22 classes completed the 16 week core program.

The average weight loss has been 5%, attendance 13 of 16 classes. The top weight loss for the 16 week core program was 12.4% or 36.4 lbs.

The program currently has 18 Lifestyle Coaches, two who are bilingual in Spanish. Our first all Spanish speaking class was offered this year.

The State of Minnesota has selected the YMCA as a partner in delivering the Diabetes Prevention Program to over 3000 Medicaid patients between 2012 and 2015.  The State has received a $10 million for this important grant project.
