Summer Sports is a safe, fun, low-competitive program designed to build teamwork, sports skills, and self-esteem. If you can't decide which week to come, choose our Sports Sampler week where you can participate in all the sports! Whether learning how to play a new sport or refining old skills, each child is a winner at the YMCA! Each clinic includes a sports related field trip. At the end of the week, show off your skills in a fun scrimmage with other YMCAs!
Summer Sports Location:The YMCA and Junior Achievement have partnered together to offer Finance Park. This unique program gives middle grade students an opportunity to develop personal money management skills, acquire personal finance knowledge and prepare for financial decisions and challenges in their adult lives. Participants will be introduced to personal finance and career explorations through four days of classroom instruction and one day of hands-on experience where they apply what they've learned. Activities include decision-making in family situations, visits to businesses to gather information for their personal financial decision-making, and learning how to use bank services; contribute to charities; purchase housing, transportation, furnishings, food, health care, and other expenses; and make investment decisions, while working to balance their budgets.
The YMCA and Junior Achievement have partnered together to offer Biztown. This unique, one-week experience places you in a role to discover, investigate and become productive citizens in a life-size replica of a real city. During the first four days, participants will “run the city” by operating the bank, post office, radio station, snack shop, city newspaper, city hall, and retail shops. Learn fist-hand what it takes to create and sustain a business, supervise employees, manage income and expenses, and hold an elected office. Participants will also learn to manage personal finances, such as writing checks and book keeping. The highlight of the week is a trip to Biztown in Maplewood where you will apply your learning and run a life-size replica city for the day!

Each week of Y Summer Extreme focuses on a challenging theme designed to get you out of your comfort zone and into an unforgettable adventure! Learn valuable skills and build self-confidence from any of our high adventure Extreme weeks.
Participate in a week of culinary adventure! You will not only learn about food preparation, but food safety, presentation, etiquette, and menu planning also. At the end of the week, grab your apron because you will be planning and preparing a formal luncheon for your invited guests. Each participant will have the opportunity to invite two adults to enjoy a gourmet luncheon prepared and served by you and your Extreme Cuisine chefs.
Bon appetite!
“Catch some air” and learn why this is one of the fastest-growing sports around! Each day, participants will visit a different wheel park where you can test your balance, weight transfer, board handling, and surface maneuvers. If you are up for more thrills and skills, take the challenge! Safety gear will be required for all participants. Bring your own skateboard or in-line skates, and safety equipment including a helmet, knee and elbow pads, and wrist guards.
This program gives participants a taste of some of the most popular Summer Extreme Program: rock climbing, water sports, challenge courses, scuba diving and cuisine. We will be indoor rock-climbing at Vertical Endeavors, participating in a challenge course with both high and low initiatives and work our culinary magic in the kitchen.
Strike out on a bold adventure of rock climbing at the Y's Rock Climbing. You'll begin your adventure with 3 days of indoor training at the Vertical Endeavors retail store and training center. Experienced climbers and instructors will teach you about equipment use, footings and grips, belay techniques, knot tying, movement strategies, and climbing safety. The last two days of the week, all of your training will be tested by experiencing outdoor climbing at spectacular Taylors Falls. Climbing and safety equipment will be provided.
The first two days of this program will be spent teaching hands-on basic outdoor skills: orienteering, cooking, tent set-up, building a fire, safety, and identifying plants and animals. Wednesday through Friday we will be heading out for
a two-night camping adventure. Participants will be involved in the entire camping experience - campsite preparation, menu preparation, supplies and activities, meal preparation, etc.
Experience all of the fun and excitement of our Rock Climbing program, with the added adventure of an overnight! After climbing at Taylors Falls on Thursday, we will settle into a nearby campsite for the night. We'll get an early start climbing on Friday to complete our expedition.
Dust off your pedals and bring out your helmet as we explore the best mountain biking trails in the Twin Cities. Each day we'll head to a different trail around town, including Lebanon Hills, The Minnesota River Bottoms, and Terrace Oaks Park. Participants will also learn important safety tips for the trail, including first aid, riding etiquette, and bike repair. Bring your own helmets and mountain bikes (no BMX bikes allowed!).
Focus in and capture the moment! Spend two days traveling throughout the Twin Cities area exploring picturesque surroundings and interesting subjects to capture on film. Learn about composition, light, shadows, and taking pictures from interesting vantage points as you take a wide variety of pictures. This experience will also give you an opportunity to gain knowledge about computer enhancement and creative display. At the conclusion of the week, you will display your best work at the Summer Extreme Photography Art Show for others to enjoy. Individuals are encouraged to bring their own digital camera equipment; we will have limited access for those without a digital camera. Fees include supplies for display.
