Summer Power Preschool #

For children ages 3 – 5 years old

Offered July 12 – August 20

Program Hours: 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

5 days per week: $160
3 days per week (MWF): $103
2 days per week (T&TH): $73
One-time, non-refundable registration fee of $50 per child.

Qualified teachers lead 3-, 4-, or 5-year-old children in activities that will help prepare them for their school years. Based upon a weekly theme, your child will learn to write, count, sit and listen, follow directions, interact with other children, recognize and express feelings, and use words to solve conflict. They will also make friends and have fun as they sing songs, participate in arts and crafts, nature studies and much more.

Summer Power is a super-lively, full-day enrichment program focused on quality, small group, age-appropriate activities. Kids stay motivated, entertained and are encouraged to make choices and exercise independent thinking. Each week is packed with an amazing variety of activities including field trips to exciting places plus inviting special interest clubs and unique programs like water games and cooking projects. Kids will learn new things while they make new friends.

Wonderful outdoor and indoor spaces at the Y give kids a wide variety of options. They’ll enjoy pools, splash decks, gyms, playgrounds and more. No two weeks are alike! Intriguing weekly themes guide engaging activities and give kids topics to look forward to. Themes are outlined on this page at left. Trained YMCA staff provides supervision, care and guidance for participants in this unrivaled summer program. It’s honest-to-goodness fun! Customize your child’s summer to fit the needs of your family. Enroll your child for the whole summer, choose a few weeks, or mix it up even more with full and partial weeks.

YMCA & Jr. Achievement’s Biztown#

Entering grades 4 – 6 in fall, 2010

Program fee: $180 for 5 days
non-refundable $50 deposit per child.

Extended Care: 6:30 – 9 a.m. & 3 – 6 p.m.

The YMCA and Junior Achievement have partnered together to offer Biztown. This unique, one-week experience places you in a role to discover, investigate and become productive citizens in a life-size replica of a real city. During the first four days, participants will “run the city” by operating the bank, post office, radio station, snack shop, city newspaper, city hall, and retail shops. Learn fist-hand what it takes to create and sustain a business, supervise employees, manage income and expenses, and hold an elected office. Participants will also learn to manage personal finances, such as writing checks and book keeping. The highlight of the week is a trip to Biztown in Maplewood where you will apply your learning and run a life-size replica city for the day!

Summer Sports#

Learn new sports, build sports skills and have fun playing!

Entering grades 1 – 6 in fall 2010

June 14 – August 20, Monday – Friday

Program Hours: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m

Summer Sports is a program where everyone plays and the emphasis is on learning a sport and building skills. Low-level competition with high-level FUN! Each week includes a sports-related field trip or surprise guest plus a fun play day with other Ys. Everyone’s a winner at YMCA Summer Sports!

Mini Sports#

Half-day sessions for children ages 4 – 5

Half-Day: $95/week

Summer Uproar#

Summer Uproar is a full-day, experience-based enrichment program that encourages older kids to explore their ever-expanding world, increase understanding, build independence and have a boatload of fun. Uproar brings a multitude of character development experiences to kids through community involvement, leadership activities, team building exercises, goal setting and more! Days are filled with super field trips, outings to amusement and water parks, and fun group activities that exercise the body, challenge the mind and nurture the spirit of our youth.

YMCA and Jr. Achievement’s Finance Park#

The YMCA and Junior Achievement have partnered together to offer Finance Park. This unique program gives middle grade students an opportunity to develop personal money management skills, acquire personal finance knowledge and prepare for financial decisions and challenges in their adult lives. Participants will be introduced to personal finance and career explorations through four days of classroom instruction and one day of hands-on experience where they apply what they’ve learned. Activities include decision-making in family situations, visits to businesses to gather information for their personal financial decision-making, and learning how to use bank services; contribute to charities; purchase housing, transportation, furnishings, food, health care, and other expenses; and make investment decisions, while working to balance their budgets.

Summer Extreme#

Each week of Y Summer Extreme focuses on a challenging theme designed to get you out of your comfort zone and into an unforgettable adventure! Learn valuable skills and build self-confidence from any of our high adventure Extreme weeks.

Extreme Cuisine

Entering grades 6 – 9 in fall, 2010
June 14 – 18
Program Fee: $255 per week

Participate in a week of culinary adventure! You will not only learn about food preparation, but food safety, presentation, etiquette, and menu planning also. At the end of the week, grab your apron because you will be planning and preparing a formal luncheon for your invited guests. Each participant will have the opportunity to invite two adults to enjoy a gourmet luncheon prepared and served by you and your Extreme Cuisine chefs. Bon appetite!

Skateboard/In-Line Skating (Recreational)

Entering grades 6 – 9 in fall, 2010

Program Fee: $200 per week

“Catch some air” and learn why this is one of the fastest-growing sports around! Each day, participants will visit a different wheel park where you can test your balance, weight transfer, board handling, and surface maneuvers. If you are up for more thrills and skills, take the challenge! Safety gear will be required for all participants. Bring your own skateboard or in-line skates, and safety equipment including a helmet, knee and elbow pads, and wrist guards.

Rock Climbing

Entering grades 6 – 9 in fall, 2010
July 5 – 9
Program Fee: $255 per week

Strike out on a bold vertical adventure. You’ll begin the week with three days of rock climbing, where experienced climbers and instructors will teach you about equipment use, footing and grips, belay techniques, knot tying, movement strategies, and climbing safety. The final two days will be spent testing your skills on some real world environment, real rock! Climbing and Safety equipment will be provided.

Abstract Art

Entering grades 6 – 9 in fall, 2010

Program Fee: $255 per week

Express your creativity! Participate in a variety of art projects including painting, clay sculpting, bead work and more. This program includes field trips to various twin cities locations to explore the amazing art culture of the twin cities.

Outdoor Survival Skills

Entering grades 6 – 9 in fall, 2010
July 26 – 30
Program Fee: $275 per week (Includes all meals for overnight experience.)

Do you find yourself building forts in your backyard? Do you wish you could brave the wilderness with your friends? Know how to cook over an open fire? You’re in luck! The first two days of this week will be spent learning: orienteering, cooking, tent set-up, fire building, safety, and other survival skills. Wednesday through Friday You’ll put your skills to the test with a 3 day, 2 night camping adventure! Participants will be involved in the entire camping experience – campsite preparation, menu preparation, supplies and activities, meal preparation etc.

Extreme Gaming

Entering grades 6 – 9 in fall 2010

$200 per week

Experience a new way to play video games. Exercise your mind and body playing various games on Playstation, Nintendo Wii, and Xbox 360. Class will focus on fun and healthy games, excluding those with extreme or graphic violent content. This program will include educational field trips and guest speakers to explore the technology behind video games. We will also touch on gaming history and discuss the different ratings of games and the background on how this is determined. The highlight of the week will be a trip to a local state of the art XRKade!

Water Sports

Bring an extra set of dry clothes because in this program you’ll be fully-immersed in water sports and activities. Each day brings new water experiences “soaked” in adventure such as canoeing, kayaking, sailing, and much more!

Digital Photography

Entering grades 6 – 9 in fall, 2010
August 16 – 20
Program Fee: $255 per week

Focus in and capture the moment! Spend four days traveling throughout the Twin Cities area and exploring picturesque surroundings and interesting subjects to capture on film. Get an introduction to composition, light, shadows, and taking pictures from interesting vantage points as you take a wide variety of pictures. This experience will also give you an opportunity to gain knowledge and skills for creative display and presentation. At the conclusion of the week, you will display your best work at the Summer Extreme Photography Art Show for others to enjoy. Individuals are encouraged to bring their own digital camera. Fees include display materials.

Mountain Biking

Entering grades 6 – 9 in fall, 2010

Program fee: $200

Dust off your pedals and bring your helmet, this isn’t your average road biking! Each day we’ll head out to a different trail in the local area, exploring the best mountain biking that the Twin Cities has to offer. Riding includes Lebanon Hills, the Minnesota River Bottoms, and Terrace Oaks Park. At the end of the week we’ll test our resolve against Minnesota’s MORC trails (Minnesota Off Road Cyclists). Participants will learn important safety tips for trail riding, first aid, riding etiquette, and even Bike repair. Bring your own helmets and Mountain Bikes (No BMX bikes allowed).
