NASM Personal Trainer, YMCA Pilates Reformer, NETA Mat Pilates

“Just two more! Keep it up, you can do two of anything!” Encouragment and support, this is why I love being a personal trainer at the Midway Y. Growing up with severe asthma and eczema, I know how hard it can be to overcome adversity when it comes to exercise. I became a personal trainer because I love feeling strong and fit and can relate to our members that don’t know where to start and feel intimidated by exercise. In my 20’s I started with mat Pilates—the one exercise that didn’t make me sweat too much (or irritate my skin) or make me wheeze. This led to joining a gym, teaching group exercise classes and feeling empowered to help others get on the road to feeling healthy, in and out of the gym. Good health is attained by a great balance of exercise, nutrition and fun! For me, fitness is mind over matter. . .if you believe it, you can do it and there are no limits to what you can achieve.

I didn’t find my passion for fitness until my early twenties as a stay at home mom of a young child. I attended Group Fitness classes at my local YMCA (in Grand Forks, ND). I hadn’t exercised or participated in sports in junior high or high school so it was new to me and, surprisingly, very fun. I wanted to help people find the fun and fulfillment in becoming more active so I joined the YMCA Fitness staff at the Southwest Area YMCA in November 1995. I started in the fitness center, than teaching group fitness classes, and eventually getting my personal trainer certification. I get the most excited working with clients that have minimal experience with exercise, showing them how to find the fun in a great workout.

“Kerry has made this an exceptional experience for me. I've learned so much more than I expected and have physically improved, and continue to do so, beyond my goals.”

Jennifer inspires me to achieve my personal best by herself being a living example of good physical and emotional health and fitness. She gives each of her clients the sense that they are the most important client she has, and relates to each of us with total commitment. I had a total hip replacement seven months ago, and Jennifer dedicated herself to learning about the procedure and, in a supportive and respectful manner, kept me active on the Pilates Reformer so that I retained the maximum amount of physical fitness possible. As I recovered, she increased my activity level so that I could return to full physical activity as soon as possible. Her commitment to good food and healthy eating is an inspiration to me, especially as I do not like to cook myself. With Jennifer's encouragement and guidance, I have changed my lifestyle from one of relative inactivity and overweight to someone who works out 2-3 hours per day, and who has gone from a dress size 18 to 12. I'm still working to achieve my goal of size 10. Not only is Jennifer my personal trainer, she has become a friend. Her fun presence is always welcome.
