“Just two more! Keep it up, you can do two of anything!” Encouragment and support, this is why I love being a personal trainer at the Midway Y. Growing up with severe asthma and eczema, I know how hard it can be to overcome adversity when it comes to exercise. I became a personal trainer because I love feeling strong and fit and can relate to our members that don’t know where to start and feel intimidated by exercise. In my 20’s I started with mat Pilates—the one exercise that didn’t make me sweat too much (or irritate my skin) or make me wheeze. This led to joining a gym, teaching group exercise classes and feeling empowered to help others get on the road to feeling healthy, in and out of the gym. Good health is attained by a great balance of exercise, nutrition and fun! For me, fitness is mind over matter. . .if you believe it, you can do it and there are no limits to what you can achieve.

I didn’t find my passion for fitness until my early twenties as a stay at home mom of a young child. I attended Group Fitness classes at my local YMCA (in Grand Forks, ND). I hadn’t exercised or participated in sports in junior high or high school so it was new to me and, surprisingly, very fun. I wanted to help people find the fun and fulfillment in becoming more active so I joined the YMCA Fitness staff at the Southwest Area YMCA in November 1995. I started in the fitness center, than teaching group fitness classes, and eventually getting my personal trainer certification. I get the most excited working with clients that have minimal experience with exercise, showing them how to find the fun in a great workout.
“Kerry has made this an exceptional experience for me. I've learned so much more than I expected and have physically improved, and continue to do so, beyond my goals.”
