What We Do

The UY serves its student leaders and the community at large through its eight student-led, student-run programs.  We categorize these programs as College Programming and Youth Serving Programs.

College Programming

Collegiate Achievers (Y CAP)

Y CAP offers first year, first-generation college students the opportunity to be part of a nurturing community that supports college persistence and develops best retention practices.  We are determined to create an environment where all have the ability and tools to succeed.

Community Leadership Intern Program (Y CLIP)

Y CLIP is an internship program that, for over 40 years, has sought to develop the ethical leaders of tomorrow and empower students to make change.  We match college students with local businesses and community organizations, and provide semester-long or summer internships.  Students meet to discuss issues that arise in the workplace, such as ethics, diversity, and professionalism.

Y Immersion

Y Immersion works to engage college students in service projects, throughout the US and internationally, in order to grow an awareness of social justice and environmental issues.

Student Board

The Student Board is made up of UY student leaders that provide guidance and vision for the entire UY.  The Student Board represents the UY in the community at large, promotes unity among programs, and helps to develop leadership in all UY participants.

Youth Serving Programs

PHD:  Physical, Healthy and Driven

PHD provides the tools and guidance to elementary and middle school students in order to improve physical activity and prepare for a healthy lifestyle. College students work with area youth and teens, instructing in nutrition, exercise, and making healthy choices.

Y Tutors
Grades K-3

Tutors serve as literacy mentors for children in the Twin Cities and participate in family literacy events on-site. The goal of the America Reads program is to have every child read on grade level by the end of the third grade. Tutors serve at least two days a week at local schools and Y’s, working individually, and/or in small groups in classrooms with children under the supervision of a teacher or site supervisor.

Y Mentors: Buddies
Grades 3-6

Buddies serve as “Bigs” to “Littles” at Twin Cities community sites. "Bigs" serve as a positive role models to the "Littles", and cultivate the values, skills, and relationships that lead to positive behaviors and educational achievement. Bigs typically spend 1 – 2 afternoons a week with their Littles.

Y Mentors:  Sparks
Grades 6-8

Mentors become positive role models to youth exploring their potential "Spark" of the environment. Mentors educate students about the environment and the issues affecting our world, globally and locally.

We're determined to empower students to take action in their own community.

Y Mentors:  College and Career
Grades 9-12

Mentors reach out in an effort to promote academic persistence and post-secondary exploration with high school students, providing FASFA support through College Goal Sunday participation with students and families.
