Mission

Minnesota YMCA Youth in Government programs develop personal growth and encourage life-long, responsible citizenship by providing experiential learning for young people and by providing public forums to recognize the abilities and capabilities of youth.

Youth in Government Programs develop and promote:

  • An understanding of local, state, national and international concerns;
  • Research, study and debate on public issues;
  • Exploration of careers in public service;
  • Interaction with adult and youth leaders involved in decision-making processes;
  • An understanding of political systems and the forum they provide for the effective and peaceful resolution of issues and concerns;
  • Appreciation for the diversity of viewpoints on public issues and a concurrent respect for ideas, beliefs and the positions of others;
  • Demonstration of citizenship responsibilities and leadership roles  essential to the health of a participatory democracy.

We implement our mission through four major initiatives:

Model Assembly Session - Students learn about government and leadership, as well as about themselves—their abilities, interests and responsibilities as citizens of a participatory democracy.

Model United Nations - A working replica of the UN, conducted by students who "adopt" a nation and research its history, economy, culture and system of government.

Youth Conference on National Affairs - "National Youth in Government" where Minnesota students meet with 600 of their counterparts from around the nation to debate national and international issues.

Leadership Training and Retreats - Staff and volunteers conduct retreats and training session throughout the year to focus on building skills, attitudes and competencies for leadership and service.

MUN was an incredible experience that enriched my mind to the challenges facing the great, peacekeeping organization…MUN helps one blossom as a public speaker and educates on the conflicting opinions of many countries. MUN is a BLAST!
